Thankfully through much prayer, deliverance and revelation I beat this habit. Now I can definitely leave my cell phone home and not bother. As a matter of fact I have become the girl who doesn’t answer her cell in my social groups. ( Yay to Jesus in me!) But still, I was haunted by this video. It didn’t simply ask if you use your phone too much, but it asked you if a cell had actually taken the place of God in my life. Have a look at the video and see what I speak of.
Now as God would have it, I became more diligent in my use of my beloved sword. Of times I would have a bible in my purse for those just in case I need it purposes. Right or wrong, I don’t know, but that’s what I did. However I decided to be more diligent in my pursuit for God’s word. I decided to walk with my purse bible and take it with me everywhere. Not only take it with me everywhere but use it everywhere. I have become the Jesus freak while travelling, while eating lunch in food courts. I have literally tried to allow my bible to be the main thing I walk with.
I realised my change one morning when I was leaving to go to work. With purse and lunch in hand I stepped outside my door and just didn’t feel right. I didn’t get it. Something literally felt like it was missing. Like you know when you have something important to do that day and you feel like you’re leaving an important document behind? It was one of those. My bible had become so significant to my daily living that to be without it felt utterly absurd. I truly need it more than I need my cell.
This reminds me of the account of the Philistines and the Ark of the Covenant in 1 Samuel 5:1-5“After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.”
The Philistines began equating their god to The LORD. They thought that it held the same pedestal or the same merit. God tried to open their eyes. He cut of its head and hands to show them, what you serve is in actuality a fish. Now if you understand the culture, the fishing industry was important to them at that point in time. It was not to say fishing is bad. God created the birds of the air and the fishes of the sea. (Genesis 1:21) However, we are not to equate anything with him and definitely not place anything above Him. Even after He showed them what it was, still they chose to honour this god.
Now some people will say I have the bible on my cell phone. The bible even came in at number 2 on Facebook’s engagement page. And yes this is good. But I do wonder; is it that the cell has become so important that the bible must now fit into your plan? How much of the time is actually spent using the bible app and how much is spent on BBM, phone calls, and Facebook? Has the bible simply become one of the things you do or is it the main thing you need on your cell. Never should the bible be one of. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
